Central hospital – disctrict of Kangaba
October 2005, southern Mali, Kangaba near the Guinean border.
In this region malaria has grown resistant to traditional chloroquine-based treatments and MSF has been conducting a pilot project here with new detection tests and a new treatment.
This is the children’s room of this hospital caring for a population of about 95,000. There are 4 beds, 3 of them occupied by infants with very bad malaria.
The grand mother in front of me stays here all day watching over her grand daughter. As I started shooting 3 visiting brothers peeked silently behind me and sat on the empty bed.
